“A MONTH FULL OF GREY”
<p>Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I'm french, that's why I'm talking funny. Please adress your complaints to my “we love showing nipples while ice-skating”country. You’ll notice that the Marvel books are ranked with their rank and evolution among the Marvel catalog.<br>

<br> Now that we have a look at the TOP500 each month (read Comichron.com for details), we realize that a lot of Marvel books are selling around 1-2K either one or two month after their release or, more supriginly, 2 years after. In the second case, that's probably an overstock, reoffered with a very nice discount. We will not include those here because there are a lot, it would triple the time it takes to write this column and pretty much confuse the general vision of a specific month sales. But it's good to know it exists. There were 92 Marvel comics in the top300 this month. That's more than usual because there was quite a bunch of Phoenix True believers books (reprints priced at $1). Phoenix and Venom are the two big things right now at Marvel. The Phoenix variant program as usual is adding something like 10% to every floppy it was applied to. Meanwhile, sales continue to fall. Sales after the 22th Marvel title are below 30K, that's worrying. Marvel announced their new relaunch program, Fresh Start. I know I won't have to scratch my mind too much to find an expression to qualify it (“F... of S...”) if it turns again into a false excuse to restart everything at #1, with many many variants and $5 or more priced issue. So far, looking at the sollicitations, it looks that way.<br>
<br>Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situed in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it's not because a copy is sold to a shop that it's sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.<br>

<p>The solicitation text is a little confusing. This is the first issue of a serie of 3 mini-series chronicling all of the X-Men history! Well, that’s ambitious, to say the least! Ed Piskor (Hip Hop Family Tree) is doing everything here. It’s 48p. It could easily become an X-men bestseller classic once collected. And it’s NOT overpriced: almost no ads, 40 pages of story, a very nice paper, an actual cover, and Ed Piskor unique point of vue. This is a move in the right direction.</p>

<p>Perfect behavior here. Marvel managed to keep 5 X-men issues from ongoing titles each month over 30K in the last 6 months. You can’t deny that’s a success. The only problem is when you compare those numbers to DC, where second-characters ongoing are selling at the same level if not better and big character ongoings way higher.</p>

<p>Lots of interesting $1 reprints to pick up. I bought almost all of them. I can't figure out who would want to buy this so-90's-style confrontation beetween Sabretooth and Jean Grey. The Death of Phoenix is the Morrisson one and boy, some friends did say to me that the end of his run on X-Men was weak, but that was an understatement. It's really confusing, with this whole Magneto-Xorn mess. And when Phoenix's death arrives, you feel like you're missing pages in your comics! Otherwise, the Cylops and Marvel Girl reprint (X-Men 48) is probably one of the worst and out-of-character X-Men issues ever. But the Phoenix Bizarre Adventures reprint and the beautiful Jerry Bingham What If reprint are really a bargain! </p>
