John Byrne's rates for commissions are:

$550 - for a single-figure pencil and ink illo with no background done on 11" x 17" board; additional figures are $200 each.

$1,100 - for a single-figure “non-X-Men” pen and ink pinup type shot w/background done in pencil and ink on 11" x 17" board; additional figures are $100 each.

$1,500 - for a single-figure pencil and ink pinup type shot featuring an X-Men character w/background done on 11" x 17" board; additional figures are $100 each.

$2,500 for most non-X-Men pieces done in pencil and ink on 18" x 24" board; includes background and up to 6 figures; additional figures are $200 each.

$4,500 for most pieces featuring X-Men characters done in pencil and ink on 18" x 24" board; includes background and up to 6 figures; additional figures are $200 each.

$3,000-$3,500 for most “non-X-Men” pieces done in pencil and ink on 20" x 30" board; includes background and up to 6 figures; additional figures are $250 each.

$5,000 for pieces featuring X-Men characters done in pencil and ink on 20" x 30" board; includes background and up to 6 figures; additional figures are $250 each.

John Byrne prices 30" x 40" commissions individually and they usually cost $8,000 - $10,000 depending on the number of figures.

John Byrne is willing to do commissions featuring most characters that he drawn in the past; he will also accept requests for some characters he has not drawn, but these generally have to be characters he is familiar with (i.e., characters published by Marvel and DC; not fan characters).

Montage commissions follow the same pricing structure as shown above; for example an 11" x 17" "non-X-Men" montage commission would be $1,100 for the first figure and $100 for each additional figure. Please note that this means each figure, not each "character", so multiple drawings of the same character each cost $100.
John does not accept commissions featuring the following:

- recreations of previous published or unpublished artwork
- religious characters
- self-portraits
- characters modeled after real people (such as Indiana Jones, Dr. Who, or Luke Skywalker)
- backgrounds featuring "real" buildings (such as the Empire State Building or some locally famous/well-known landmark)
- television cartoon characters
- commissions that feature nudity or are of a perverse nature
- pencil-only commissions
- color commissions
- commissions to be done on books, sketchcards, or boards supplied by the customer (he will only use his own materials)
- commissions that require dialogue, word balloons, etc. (Except for cover reimaginings)

John can also add gray tonal effects to some commissions; the request for tonal effects has to be made when placing the initial order. JB will decide whether or not he can add the tonal effects on an individual basis. If JB decides the tonal effects will work for a given piece, the price will be approximately 40% higher than the standard rates posted above.

John Byrne will not draw recreations, but he will do cover "reimaginings" (his version) of some covers that he or other artists have drawn. Reimaginings are limited to covers only; he will not reimagine another artist's interior pages. He is willing to draw multiple reimaginings of the same cover; all reimaginings will be distinctive and not have the same layout as a previous version. Reimagining commissions follow the same pricing structure as shown above; for example an 11" x 17" "non-X-Men" reimagining would be $1,100 for the first figure and $100 for each additional figure. JB is only accepting cover reimagining requests drawn on 11" x 17" board.

Generally, all commissions are done for a fan's personal collection and there are no rights for the piece to be published. Under certain circumstances, John will do a commission which is intended for publication in an independent comic or fanzine. Rates for commissions intended for publication are generally 25% higher than the standard rates posted above and include the original artwork as well as John agreeing that no residuals from the number of copies sold are due to him.
