“GIMMICK, GIMMICK, GIMMICK A SUPER-HERO AFTER MIDNIGHT!”
<p>Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I'm french, that's why I'm talking funny. Please adress your complaints to my “we pay our electricians with Picasso paintings” country. For any information about the french magazine on US comics I'm editing –special issue #16 on 11 exemples of crazy independant us comics-, please send me a message using my e-mail adress from any of my own commentaries. You’ll notice that the Marvel books are ranked with their rank and evolution among the Marvel catalog.<br>
<br>An handfull of the artistic teams of the upcoming relaunch of the whole Marvel line are now known. So far, logic (Mark Waid on Dr Strange after his great mini-serie with Emma Rios) and surprise (Ryan Otlley on something else than Invincible) are “de mise”. As always, that’s probably not what the angry fanboys are expecting, because those angry fanboys for the most part are not buying modern mainstream anymore and prefer the activity to bitch about modern mainstream as a whole. I know, I fear I might be one of them. In retrospect, 1-2 years after their release, I realize that a super-hero comics was published by Marvel,which appealed to me. But, thanks to such a crappy job Marvel is doing promoting the content of a comics, and their even more crappier sales & price strategy, everything seems to be done to make me think I shouldn’t buy it. That’s how I discovered what a gem Dennis Hopeless & Javier Rodriguez’s Spider-Woman was. But, at the time of its release, the only information I noticed about this comics was its many variant covers (and among them a Manara stupid one), the many crossovers about Spider-Women, and what seems like endless relaunches and remunbering when, in fact, Dennis Hopeless & Javier Rodriguez were really building a nice chunk of run by themselves.<br>
<br>Dr Strange in Space by Mark Waid and Ryan Ottley on Spider-Man? On the paper, it should attract me. But double shipping, over pricing, endless renumbering, crossovers, tie-in and tons of variant making each issue uncoregnizable will probably kill my enthousiasm. It should all be about content and art. It’s not anymore. We are now approaching 15% of a comics sales done thanks to a variant program. It’s time to go back to the roots. Marvel, sell me your comics, not your covers, your movies, or your recipe for a mix between Venom, Punisher and Wolverine! You used to know how to do it. <br>
<br>Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situed in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it's not because a copy is sold to a shop that it's sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.<br>

<p>The weekly event No Surrender begins, with a $5 issue inflated by tons of variants. The others issues “only” have a connecting variant cover and an Avengers variant. If the result are not tremendous (we are only 4K over #674 sales level)), selling $17 of Avengers at more than 35K in one month is not a small feature. Issue #78 sales are divided in two editions, here added one to the other. </p>

Darth Vader has lately done a better job at levelling out so I would put my money on Darth Vader being the best selling Marvel title next month. TPB sales are in heaven with a moderate deperdition of readers from one TPB volume to the other.All the volume are back in the chart this month!</p>

<p>I hadn’t purchased a Marvel comics from the racks in years! This is awesome! Taking some minor liberties (tying everything up with the Phoenix Force), Ed Piskor is retelling here the entirety of the X-Men history until X-Men began reprinting old issues. His style is perfect for it, as it kind of place the X-Men both as pop culture icons and weird freaks. It’s really a bargain coming from Marvel. The first collection, giant-sized, in the same format than the Hip Hop book from Piskor, will go out in April, collecting those two issues with bonuses. If you have the money, purchase it, if not, those issues will do the trick (but you then need a good vision because there is a lot of small text). So far, that’s a decent amount of sales, with a second printing of #1 bumping up its sales. It could skyrocket in collected format and attract a Piskor or hip-hop public to mainstream comics.</p>
