Five years (and a few abandoned ideas) later, the seeds planted at that dinner are now a reality. The duo is teaming for FML, an eight-issue comic from Dark Horse due out in November.

For DeConnick, the book is deeply personal, as her teenage son and daughter helped inspire the surreal coming-of-age series centering on the relationship between a mother and her son.

Issue No. 1 is narrated by Riley, a heavy metal kid who uses his ballpoint pen and notepad to process the horrors of modern high school life — from active shooter drills to social anxiety. Issue No. 2 is told from the perspective of Riley’s mother, an aging punk cartoonist with a true-crime obsession. Together, the two narratives paint a picture of a mother and son trying to survive a Portland plagued by wildfires and the coronavirus pandemic. Against that backdrop, there’s a murder mystery — and even the transformation of a character into a monster.

As DeConnick notes, her son is growing up in a moment in which conversations around masculinity often have the word “toxic” used in association. That has DeConnick grappling with how to help guide her son as he heads toward adulthood, and it’s a theme she poured into the book.

“I want my kids to be able to wrap their brains around the idea that there have been ways that a toxic framing of masculinity has been behind a lot of bad behavior,” DeConnick tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It doesn’t mean that it’s a bad thing to be a man.”

Though the mom, brother and sister characters in FML have similarities to the author and her children, the family has discussed how a character is not the person who inspired it.

“It’s just a starting place of an idea,” says DeConnick, who adds her kids have embraced being involved in the book. “My aim is not to embarrass you. Even if we all agree that that character is not you, I still don’t want you to be made uncomfortable by anything.”

DeConnick and López are joined by colorist Cris Peter and letterer Clayton Cowles, both of whom worked with DeConnick on Bitch Planet, her most recent creator owned title, which ran from 2014-17.

The scribe notes that the comic book industry has changed quite a bit in the decade since she launched Bitch Planet. It’s harder than ever to draw attention to projects, so she is experimenting with new ways to engage readers. She put Easter eggs into her newsletter, including one that directed people to a website for a fictional band featured in FML. A savvy reader even messaged the band, asking to book them for a wedding. DeConnick is also exploring appearances on true-crime podcasts, given the book’s connection to the genre.

As for getting to once again work with López, DeConnick notes that he seemingly draws faster than she writes, and he is not afraid to kill his darlings. “He doesn’t mind tossing things out,” says DeConnick of the artist, who is more than willing to discard pages if better ideas come along.

It's a busy few months for Hellboy fans, with a new (and Mike Mignola approved) movie on the way. Now, Newsarama can exclusively reveal that a two-issue sequel to one of the best Hellboy comics of recent years is also incoming.

Giant Robot Hellboy Returns is the follow up to last year's limited series, which saw Big Red become a Big Mech. Giant Robot Hellboy Returns will once again by written by Mike Mignola himself and drawn by Duncan Fegredo, colorist Dave Stewart, and letterer Clem Robins. Fegredo will also be handling the series' main covers. A variant cover by Our Bones Dust artist Ben Stenbeck (pictured in the gallery below) will be available for #1, with #2 receiving a variant from James Harren.

"What started as a funny drawing – A joke – has taken on a life of its own," said Mignola in a statement about the new comic. "And watching Duncan breathe life into this thing is pure joy."

Dark Horse's official synopsis for the first issue gives us a hint of the story – and it sounds like Hellboy will be embarking on an undersea odyssey in the new comic:

"After Hellboy is kidnapped and connected to a massive mecha-Hellboy for a mission on a mysterious, faraway island, Giant Robot Hellboy disappears. Scientists comb the sea looking for him but find more than they bargained for when an interdimensional portal threatens to pull them in – or let monsters of unknown origin out."

Giant Robot Hellboy Returns #1 will be published by Dark Horse Comics sometime in 2025.

Writer Mark Millar’s next Dark Horse series will be a survival adventure story set in the one place vampires can’t go. Vatican City, a three-issue series by Millar and artist Per Berg, is set during a vampire apocalypse that has wiped out all of humanity, except for about 2,000 tourists and Vatican staffers who are safe in a place filled with vampire-repelling holy water, relics, and crosses. While the humans struggle inside the city, the vampires wait patiently outside, and being undead, they have plenty of time. The first issue will go on sale on April 9, 2025, with an MSRP of $5.99 and a main cover by Berg, with variants by John McCrea and John Kalisz.

"I’ve had this idea for years, Assault on Precinct 13 with vampires, tourists and staff safe behind the holy relics in The Vatican while the rest of the world outside has been taken down by the forces of darkness,” Millar said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “I wrote it into The Magic Order as a little subplot in volume 3, but really wanted to flesh it out and tell the whole story. Vatican City is my big chance.”

Le projet de Mark Millar et John Romita Jr est prévu pour cet été :

Citation:

Speaking of which, Valerio and I have just started our next project together. I had such a great time working with this guy and have now signed him up to a huge epic I’m launching late Summer. You’ll get details as we get closer. In the meantime, look out for the new book John Romita Jr and I are doing right now and coming your way slightly earlier in the summer months. This one is going to be mega and HUGELY controversial. Nobody will have seen this coming, but we’ve spotted a huge gap in the market we plan to fill.

“The Umbrella Academy” is coming back this June with a new story told in its original comic-book medium from creators Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá and Dark Horse Comics.

Per the description for “The Umbrella Academy: Plan B,” “After the mass release of The City’s greatest foes and the chaos that followed in Hotel Oblivion, the Umbrella Academy faces their most fearsome challenge to date–their other brothers and sisters. Known only as The Sparrows, they share a different connection to Sir Reginald Hargreeves and Mom. No one knows how to hurt each other more than family, and this powerful, ruthless brood will spare no brutality in favor of their sole objective—control and the obedient glare that comes with it.”

The new comic is co-written by Way and Bá (who also illustrates), colored by Dave Stewart and lettered by Nate Piekos.

It will be released June 11 and is currently available for preorder for $4.99.

Dark Horse says Issue #1 will feature six variant covers illustrated by artists including Fabio Moon, Claire Roe, Mike del Mundo, Duncan Fegredo, David Aja and Jill Thompson.

“Telling this story with Gabriel would become, as it is today, such a special part of my life,” Way told Variety about continuing “The Umbrella Academy” comics. “This is not only because we would evolve as artists— but because we had the opportunity to grow up over a pretty crazy adventure together. Each chapter of this story seems to form and coalesce into its own organism— sometimes it’s a screaming baby on a subway car, other times a great big metal bird falling from the sky — and because of this, I am just as excited for ‘Plan B’ as I was when we went on this trip together with ‘Apocalypse Suite.'”

Netflix’s TV series adaptation of Way and Bá’s “The Umbrella Academy” comics ended its four season run last August. During that time, the comics weren’t regularly coming out with new issues.

“Comics are our passion and it’s where we have complete freedom to tell the story the best way we can,” Bá told Variety. “We were in the middle of making ‘Hotel Oblivion’ when the whole Netflix thing started, which injected us with a new boost of energy to keep on telling our story, given the huge interest that the show brought to the original comics. We never actually stopped working on the new material, but the pandemics were a blow we were not expecting. It took us some time to get back on our feet and work on the new scripts. We really love this comic and it helped us get through this.”

In regards to how storylines from the Netflix adaptation could come into play in the “Plan B” comic, which focuses on The Sparrows, which were featured in the TV series, Bá said: “Just as it happened with every season of the show, they took elements from our original story and worked it out into telling it their way. They used ideas we haven’t done yet, but differently than we originally intended for the comics. And that’s the fun of the show, in my opinion. It began very similar, but it grew to become a completely different thing, even though it has some elements that are the same. So we might see things in the comics that have appeared on the show, like the Sparrows, but the reader will soon be reminded what makes our comics so unique and why we love this medium so much.”
