Godzilla has fought numerous foes on the big screen in recent years, including fellow classic monster King Kong. Now the Kaiju will take on Marvel superheroes with Godzilla vs. Marvel, a series of one-shots that will include Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men, and Thor.

This marks Marvel’s first Godzilla crossover event in nearly fifty years, after the character starred in the series Godzilla, King of the Monsters, which ran from 1977-79 and was set in the mainline Marvel Comics universe.

The six comics will take place over different time periods, with the first issue bowing in March. Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four will center on the Fantastic Four battling classic Godzilla antagonist King Ghidorah, who has been imbued with the power cosmic as the new herald for Galactus, the giant devourer of worlds. In this issue, Godzilla will actually team up with the Silver Surfer in order to attempt to save the Earth. Ryan North writes, with art from John Romita Jr.

Marvel VP of licensing and publishing Sven Larsen spent years talking with rights holder Toho about a crossover event.

“We approached them initially for our reprints, but a while after those conversations, it was clear that both of our teams were excited to do more together,” says Marvel editor in chief C.B. Cebulski. “These crossovers started coming together over that time, in direct collaboration with Toho, and we felt the perfect time for them was for Godzilla’s 70th anniversary next year. We’ve been thrilled to work with them on these, and we hope this will be a sign for more exciting projects to come.”

Godzilla has had a resurgence in popularity in recent years, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire earning $571 million globally, and extending the winning streak of Legendary’s MonsterVerse, while the Japanese feature Godzilla Minus One became a sleeper hit and won an Oscar. Godzilla also made an appearance in the pages of DC Comics with Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, released last year.

“For us, kaiju—and specifically Godzilla—are important parts of Marvel’s comic history, so we knew we wanted to explore something with their teams,” says Dan Buckley, president, Marvel Comics & Franchises. “We’ve always been fans of Godzilla, but with the steady rise in Godzilla’s popularity over the years, it’s part of our current cultural zeitgeist and a perfect example of the fun that the comics industry can bring. We’re focused on the storytelling first and foremost, but fun opportunities for crossovers like this give both of our fans an entertaining escape that they won’t want to miss.”

It’s hard out there, even for a genetically enhanced superperson, and Spider-Man will learn it the hard way in his next relaunch. Polygon can exclusively announce that Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man #1, from writer Joe Kelly and artists Pepe Larraz and John Romita Jr., will drop in April 2025.

The pieces are in place for a classic Spider-Man adventure: Peter Parker is jobless, the Rhino is on the loose, and according to the an official synopsis for the book, “a major Spider-Villain is working behind the scenes weaponizing other Spider-Villains including one we haven’t seen in OVER SEVEN YEARS?!”

Meanwhile, Norman Osborn is Goblin-free and… well, that’s for Kelly, Larraz, and Romita Jr. to reveal.

Based on gushing comments sent to Polygon, Kelly and Larraz are living a dream with this new Spider-Man book — both men cite the hero as one of their first comic book obsessions when they were kids. So where do you even begin when challenged with adding to the 60-year legacy of the webslinger and his rogue’s gallery?

“Humility is a good start,” Kelly writes back to me, with a well-earned smile emoji. “Even though this is a new #1, I don’t think of it as a ‘restart’ per se. I’m writing the next chapter of the story of one the world’s greatest characters, lucky enough to follow in the footsteps of the folks before me. After that sinks in, I spend a lot of time thinking about what I love about Spider-Man and his cast, what stories resonated with me at different times of my life, and how I can synthesize all of that into something that works with what came before but breaks new ground. I’m fascinated by the internal lives of these characters and exploring new territory there — Peter’s youth is interesting, for example, the days before he was “puny Parker” in high school. At the same time, I feel a drive to take bold, unexpected swings in order to see how Spider-Man deals with Marvel-sized curve balls. Pressure makes diamonds.”

In approaching Spidey as a lifelong fan, Larraz also found himself gravitating toward the physicality of the icon.

“The most important part of Spider-Man that I wanted to portray accurately is Peter,” he said. “Of course I can talk about drawing a believable New York, I shot hundreds of pictures of details of the city for reference, or how I’ve focused on drawing the flow of Spidey’s movement and speed in a way closer to animation than comics. But I think Spider-Man comics work because we care about Peter and his world, so that was my main focus: To draw a Peter that you instantly recognize and empathize [with]. Fortunately Joe’s script is fantastic and he captured Peter’s voice in a way so perfect that made the work much easier for me.”

Larraz credits not only Kelly’s humor and sense of action for making the tall order of illustrating a Spider-Man book a thrill, but nods to both colorist Marte Gracia (“a guarantee that no matter what I do, the book will be beautiful”) and Marvel editor Nick Lowe for the support required to bring it all to life in an authentic way.

“I didn’t think we could get Joe for a substantial run of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN,” Lowe said in a statement. “He’s always so busy with animation and television and movies, so he usually just dips in and out of comics. That’s why we tapped him for ‘The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man.’ He was doing so great so when he asked if we’d consider him for being the ongoing writer, I felt like I won the lottery. Add Pepe Larraz’s masterful and supersonic talent to the equation and we knew we had the makings of an instant classic. Then John Jr. agreed to stay on… fireworks went off. I better go buy some lottery tickets!”

Il est déjà sur Spider-man en ce moment, mais il est vrai que je ne m'attendais pas à ce qu'il reste au-delà de son arc 8 deaths of Spider-man. Non seulement c'est le cas, mais on lui adjoint le dessinateur superstar du moment, ce qui, je dois bien l'avouer, capte tout mon intérêt :)

“I’ve loved the character of Josiah X ever since he first appeared in The Crew back in 2003,” Narcisse explained. “As the son of Isaiah Bradley—cloned in secret experiments—he’s had a complicated legacy thrust upon him. His previous stories showed him struggling to figure out how to find purpose and protect the vulnerable in a world that’s all too ready to exploit him and others on society’s margins. When we meet him as the Shadow Soldier in SAM WILSON: CAPTAIN AMERICA, he’s a hero at the next stage of his evolution, someone who’s answered those existential questions with a new codename, new uniform, and specific outlook. He’s a great counterpoint to Sam, in that they’re trying to do the right thing with very different attitudes. We’re really excited to bring him back in a way that honors the past and hopefully opens up a promising future.”

The character has a new design thanks to Taurin Clarke.

“When I was approached to do the covers for SAM WILSON: CAPTAIN AMERICA, I saw a chance to update a few characters,” Clarke shared. “After getting the thumbs up to update Patriot’s hair from our amazing editors, the fans on social media immediately started asking about Josiah!

“I knew we had a huge task ahead of us, so I went in with notes from our co-writer Evan Narcisse, who also provided some great insights from the legendary Christopher Priest, and set out to create a design that reflects where Josiah is at mentally right now while staying true to his history. He’s currently operating in the shadows, but he’s still a byproduct of his time as America’s forgotten super soldier, so there’s elements of his old costume from The Crew integrated into what’s essentially a covert-ops suit. Pieces of his old chainmail are underneath his vest as additional bulletproof armor, and his old bandana is under his Kevlar mask as a reminder of who he is. Evan noted that Josiah should also wear the colors of Red, Gold, Black and Green just as proudly as he wore the Red, White and Blue, so we made sure to integrate that into his costume as well. I really hope what we’ve done resonates with fans.”
