As it celebrates its 25th anniversary, DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint will relaunch this fall with seven new comic book series showcasing original stories about hot button topics from creators inside and outside of the comic book industry.

In addition to creators like Mark Russell, Mike Dowling, Mirka Andolfo and Ramon Villalobos — all of whom have worked for DC, and in some cases, the Vertigo imprint, previously — the new books also feature a number of names making their comic book debuts, including video game developer and writer Zoe Quinn, Nine Inch Nails art director Rob Sheridan and sex education podcaster Tina Horn, with the subject matter of series including white supremacy, virtual reality deities and sex workers struggling to survive in a repressed future dystopia.

The seven new series — listed below —will, alongside the already-announced four-title Sandman Universe line, form the heart of the new Vertigo as the imprint refocuses its effort on what DC is describing as “modern, socially relevant, high-concept, inventive” material.

At the center of the move is Mark Doyle, who stepped into the position of DC Vertigo executive editor last year after a stint as editor of the Batman comic book group, during which he edited the best-selling run by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, as well as overseeing critically acclaimed titles like Gotham Academy, Grayson and Batgirl.

“It’s time to rebuild DC Vertigo,” Doyle said in a statement. “We’re returning to our roots by spotlighting the most exciting new voices in comics, as well as bringing new voices to comics. From the corners of television, games, music, activism, podcasting, comics and more, all of our creators are passionate and have something to say. These sophisticated stories have amazing new characters and vast worlds to explore. That’s what it has always been about for me — new stories, new voices, new possibilities. We’re creating a new generation of DC Vertigo classics for readers of all genres.”

Geoff Johns Exits DC Entertainment for Writing and Producing Deal

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/geoff-johns-exits-dc-entertainment-writing-producing-deal-1118131

DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns — who went from authoring comic books to having a major hand in the making of movies and television shows based on famous heroes — is stepping down from his executive post and entering into an exclusive writer-producer deal with Warner Bros. and DC, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Johns is launching Mad Ghost Productions, a new banner that will see him work on content for films, television and comic books, and have his hand in current DC properties as well as new and reimagined creations.

At the same time, current DC Entertainment publisher Jim Lee will assume the chief creative officer position, taking on the duties while continuing to act as publisher with Dan DiDio. The two have jointly held the post since 2010.

The moves come in the wake of last week’s exit of Diane Nelson, DC Entertainment’s president, to whom Johns reported, and occurs the day before a judge’s decision will be announced in the high-profile anti-trust trial between the U.S. Department of Justice and AT&T, which is seeking to merge with Time Warner, the parent company of both Warner Bros. and DC.

And it takes place as Warners’ movie division is in the midst of a transition as Walter Hamada, who was installed as president of DC-based films at the studio by pictures group chairman Toby Emmerich, in January, begins to shape the superhero slate in the post-Justice League era.

Johns now goes from the executive ranks back to the creative world, a world which he never truly left. Even as he was promoted to DC Entertainment president in 2016, and retained the title of chief creative officer, which he had held since 2010, he continued to pen some of DC’s biggest books. And, more impactfullly, he was key in launching the TV empire based on DC’s heroes, co-developing The CW’s most successful superhero show, The Flash, and with Peter Roth and WBTV, launching Supergirl and Black Lightning, and many others.

The move in essense unshackles him from the boardroom and positions him to be a major force and supplier of content just as Warners' need and audience demand for that sort of material rises like a mercury on steroids.

“I took on a role at DCE because I love the characters and this universe more than anything. But, I want to spend my days writing and on set. I’m thrilled to get back to a more hands-on creative role. It’s a dream job on dream projects, reaching even deeper into DC’s vast pantheon of characters,” said Johns in a statement.

One of John’s first projects will be Green Lantern Corps, based on DC’s intergalactic police heroes which Johns is already very familiar with, having spent nine years writing Green Lantern comics and its spin-offs and publishing events. Johns will write the screenplay and act as one of the producers on the feature film. Johns is already writing and producing Wonder Woman 2 and will have a co-writing and executive producing credit on Aquaman, this year's only DC offering that opens in December.

“Geoff is a super talented writer and truly embedded in the DC Universe and its characters,” stated Emmerich. “We’re thrilled that he’s returning to his passion and his roots as a writer and producer. And, it’s even better that he’s staying in our Warner Bros. family. We look forward to working with him on ‘Green Lantern’ and other projects going forward.”

On the television side, Johns co-developed and is executive producing (alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Jeremy Carver) and writing on the first original series for the upcoming DC Universe digital service, Titans. Johns also wrote the Titans episode “Doom Patrol” that it is spinning out into its own 13-episode original series for the digital service.

On the publishing side, Johns will write and curate a DC pop-up label under the moniker The Killing Zone, focusing on new and lesser known or dormant DC characters and titles. He will also write a new Shazam comic series scheduled to hit this fall as well as a comic titled Three Jokers, drawn by Jason Fabok. The latter was a project sidelined as Johns’ time was taken up by executive and screen commitments.

“Geoff is one of DC Comics’ most prolific writers, and we can’t wait to see what he does next now that he will be dedicating 100 percent of his time to telling the best DC stories possible across all media," stated DiDio and Lee.

DC Black Label is a brand-new publishing imprint dedicated to giving premier writers and artists the chance to expand on DC’s unrivaled characters with unique, standalone stories set outside DC continuity. The imprint will be DC’s home for classy, collectible superhero stories aimed at mature readers looking to be challenged and surprised as they’re entertained, with an eye for the unique and remarkable. In that regard, each DC Black Label series will have a unique format and a release schedule designed to best serve the story and creative vision, with the first of the previously announced DC Black Label titles set to debut later this year:

BATMAN: DAMNED #1 – September 19, 2018 (bimonthly, three issues)
SUPERMAN: YEAR ONE #1 – November, 2018 (bimonthly, three issues)
THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE #1 – December, 2018 (three issues)

While the new, upcoming series have gotten fans talking—and all of us here at DC are as excited to read them as you are, so we certainly understand—they’ll also be joined under the banner by some beloved existing titles that represent the DC Black Label spirit and mission. These were Black Label books before there was a Black Label, and can give fans a clearer idea of what to expect from the line as a whole.

The first out of the gate will be Sean Murphy’s BATMAN: WHITE KNIGHT, which recently wrapped up its eight-issue run. With its ruminations on the true meaning of justice and whether Gotham City’s crimefighters may be just as mad as its criminals, Batman: White Knight resonated with fans and critics alike, resulting in one of the most important and thoroughly original Batman comics released in quite some time. A crucial storyline that both redefines the Dark Knight and his cast of characters while taking them on an imaginative and wholly original adventure that wouldn’t be possible within DC Universe continuity, Batman: White Knight will be right at home at DC Black Label when the collected edition is released on October 9th.

In addition, fans can look forward to several of DC’s most acclaimed and influential comics getting a DC Black Label release as well. Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, Darwyn Cooke’s DC: THE NEW FRONTIER and Mark Waid and Alex Ross’ KINGDOM COME will all soon be released under the imprint. They’ll also be joined by some historic work from legendary artist and writer Frank Miller, whose BATMAN: YEAR ONE and BATMAN: DARK KNIGHT: MASTER RACE will become part of the line as well, timed to the release of his new Superman: Year One series with John Romita, Jr.

In short, it’s a great year to be a fan of smart, genre-pushing comic books. If this is the first time you’re hearing about the new DC Black Label titles, you’ll definitely want to check out our earlier announcement for all the details. But for the rest of you, let us know what you think! Are you excited about the way DC Black Label is shaping up? Will you be grabbing the Batman: White Knight collected edition? Which of the new DC Black Label books are you most excited about? Sound off in the comments below!

https://www.dccomics.com/blog/2018/06/15/shedding-new-light-on-dc-black-label

DC Comics has announced release dates for the first issues of its inaugural round of Black Label titles, each of which will run for three issues.

Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo's Batman: Damned #1 will release September 19, with later issues releasing bimonthly. Frank Miller and John Romita, Jr.'s Superman: Year One #1 will now arrive in November as opposed to its intially projected August release date, and continue bimonthly. Finally, The Other History of the DC Universe #1 from writer John Ridley and an unannounced art team will debut in December, following a monthly schedule thereafter.

Previously announced but unscheduled titles include Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Jimenez; Batman: Last Knight on Earth by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, and Wonder Woman: Diana's Daughter by Greg Rucka and an artist to be announced.

Check out more details on the announced titles here .

Additionally, DC will reprint several titles from its now defunct Elseworlds and All-Star lines under its Black Label imprint, all of which can be said to follow the same creator-driven ethos of the line.

The titles to be reprinted include Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's All-Star Superman, Mark Waid and Alex Ross's Kingdom Come, Darwyn Cooke's The New Frontier, Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli's Batman: Year One, and Miller, Azzarello and Andy Kubert's Dark Knight III: The Master Race. Sean Gordon Murphy's Batman: White Knight will also be collected under the Black Label imprint, as previously reported.

No specific release dates for these reprints were announced.

“DC UNIVERSE is so much more than a streaming service. It’s a welcoming place for everyone to immerse themselves in their own level of DC fandom, with the epic characters, stories, and experiences they have come to expect from DC,” said Jim Lee, chief creative officer and publisher, DC Entertainment. “We are investing in and creating original, high-quality shows including the new Titans series, and curating the most beloved nostalgic content, while at the same time elevating the comic reading experience to new heights. Nothing this robust has ever been offered to fans before.”Credit: Warner Bros. Televsion

WATCH

At the heart of DC UNIVERSE will be all-new exclusive original live-action and animated series based on DC’s iconic characters. Developed by Warner Bros. Television, Swamp Thing and Doom Patrol are scheduled to debut in 2019, following the dramatic, live-action adventure series Titans which premieres later this year. Warner Bros. Animation is also developing a slate of animated TV series based on existing fan favorites, including Harley Quinn and the highly anticipated third season of the popular Young Justice: Outsiders animated series which are both scheduled to debut in 2019.

Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise. Dick Grayson and Rachel Roth, a special young girl possessed by a strange darkness, get embroiled in a conspiracy that could bring Hell on Earth. Joining them along the way are the hot-headed Starfire and loveable Beast Boy. Together they become a surrogate family and team of heroes. Doom Patrol is a reimagining of one of DC’s strangest group of outcasts: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Woman and Crazy Jane. Led by the mysterious Dr. Niles Caulder they're called into action by the ultimate hero for the digital age, Cyborg. Banding together these rejects find themselves on a mission that will take them to the weirdest and most unexpected corners of the DC universe. Swamp Thing follows Abby Arcane as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe. Young Justice: Outsiders features the return of the fan favorite animated series with a huge cast of DC's most iconic young superheroes - plus brand-new characters, many of whom are just discovering their unique meta-powers and special abilities. Set against the backdrop of a rich, deep world that touches all corners of the DC universe, the season focuses on meta–trafficking, and an intergalactic arms race for control of these super–powered youths. Harley Quinn follows Harley’s adventures after she breaks up with the Joker and strikes out on her own in this new adult animated comedy. With the help of Poison Ivy and a ragtag crew of DC castoffs, Harley tries to earn a seat at the biggest table in villainy: the Legion of the Doom. An assortment of DC’s most beloved superhero films will also be available at launch for exclusive streaming windows, including all four original Superman movies as well as a selection of epic animated movies including Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, Green Lantern: First Flight, and Wonder Woman. The service will also feature classic TV shows, including the first two seasons of Batman: The Animated Series and the original Wonder Woman series available for the first time in HD.

Rotating selections will cater to both members new to comics and passionate fans looking for hard-to-find titles. Comics can also be downloaded for reading offline on a smartphone or tablet.

“We wanted the DC UNIVERSE comic reader to be a blend of art and technology that would further enhance fans’ experiences of the live-action and animated programming on DC UNIVERSE,” said Dan DiDio, publisher, DC Entertainment. “This hand-curated selection from our decades of comic creations gives fans a thematic digital longbox to carry with them on the device of their choosing or lets them watch exclusive video content on a big screen followed by the comic that inspired it.”
