Joe Quesada launches his New Publisher, Amazing Comics, at San Diego Comic-Con, with Mad Cave and Dupuis - and a new comic called Disciple
At the Mad Cave Studios panel, they announced that Dupuis, the longest-running comic book publisher in Europe, over a hundred years, would be collaborating with Mad Cave Studios. But also with former Marvel EIC and CCO Joe Quesada with a new project called Amazing Comics.
Their first book is The Disciple, by Joe Quesada, and film producer Charlie Dorfman, and artists Wade Von Grawbadger, and Richard Isanove. It is described as Hamlet in a world of assassins. But starting with a prequel, a "young Hamlet". The idea of Amazing Comics started for Joe in 2005, as he wanted to leave a legacy and work without a safety net. It's a character and story-focused response to all the other companies talking about IP and entertainment franchises.

Après 6 tomes de Atlas Comics Librairie avec pas mal de Maneely sur du non super-héros, Fantagraphics sort en mars 2025 le premier tome de Lost Marvels.
Le premier tome reprend les 9 numéros de Tower of Shadows avec pas mal de Wally Wood mais aussi Colan, Buscema, Barry smith.. et cette magnifique histoire de steranko déjà dispo dans le visionaries de l auteur.
Ce sont des histoires d horreur avec u. Conteur.
A voir ce que seront les prochains tomes...??

Encore un truc qu iva trouer le portefeuille, mais qu il se faut de posséder ... (de mon point de vue, surtout que le recueil est moins cher que le 1er d'occase en etat moyen ...)
Les Wally Wood sont dans le - Sorcelleries, des éditions du Fromage / Neptune.
La Neal Adams est dans Ténèbres écarlates (Editions du Triton - Echo des savanes)
une partie des BWS + la Neal Adams et quelques autres ont été publiées dans l'echo des savanes.
Ca laise du Ditko, du Reprint du King de 1955-1960, du Buscema et bcp de Heck (qui s'encre tout seul, sur de l'horreur ... )

Après avoir été publié en comics chez Moonstone entre 2002 et 2010, belle et bonne période avec plusieurs titres et des explorations des prédécesseurs du personnage classique, l'on a appris en janvier 2024 que le Phantom allait revenir chez l’éditeur suite au passage Dynamite (2010-2013) et Hermes Press (2014-2023).
Mike Bullock, déjà scénariste principal à l’époque, retrouve son poste pour cette relance à laquelle est associé Mandrake, lui aussi chez Moonstone en accord avec Kings Feature, détenteur des droits.
Sergio Ibanez, habitué à dessiner Kolchak chez Moonstone, doit dessiner au moins le début du Phantom, avec une première image diffusée :

Defenders of the Earth, c'est une série animée de 65 épisodes entre 1986 et 1987, réunissant Flash Gordon (et son fils), le Phantom (et sa fille), Mandrake (et son pupille) et Lothar (et son fils) pour contrer l'invasion de la Terre par l'Empereur Ming, après l'assassinat de la femme de Flash par ce dernier.

Le contenu n'est pas encore communiqué, mais cela interpelle alors que Moonstone n'a rien communiqué depuis l'interview de janvier 2024 avec un fan du Phantom.
Est-ce que King Features diviserait les droits entre Moonstone et Mad Cave ?
A titre perso’, j’ai l’hypothèse que Mad Cave a les droits du Phantom via les Defenders of the Earth, donc ils pourraient produire des choses via la version du Phantom des DotE. Pour mémoire, ce Phantom n’est pas le 21e classique, il a un look différent, il a une fille, il a des super-pouvoirs.
A voir, je suis curieux mais j’espère qu’il n’y aura pas des imbroglios comme lors de la transition Dynamite (qui avait succédé à Moonstone) vers Hermes Press, où les délais longs avaient créé une léthargie de laquelle Hermes n’était jamais sortie. Bien que cet éditeur n’ai fait qu’une mini-série inédite (par Peter David et Sal Velluto) et a beaucoup (beaucoup…) réédité des anciens comics.
Tout comme toi j'aime ce perso, et tout comme toi j'ai été intrigué par l'annonce de ce FCBD.

Je suppose que tu avais lu la mini-série de PAD, qu'en pensais-tu ?
Je ne sais pas si tu as lu les séries Dynamite, mais The Last Phantom m'a déçu alors les sagas Kings qui réunissaient déjà le Phantom avec Flash Gordon, Mandrake et Lothar m'ont plu même si elles étaient très irrégulières (Kings Watch, Kings Quest, les mini-séries sur chaque personnage de King Features puis Flash Gordon: Kings Cross en épilogue maladroit).
Moonstone avait une approche plus "grand-public", avec un Phantom patrimonial (c'était l'image d'Epinal, sans grand changement) mais des épisodes plus régulièrement corrects.
La dernière chose que j'ai lu sur le perso était effectivement la mini de PaD chez Moonstone, et il me semble qu'on en avait parlé à l'époque.
J'avais bien aimé, même si je trouvais ça en dessous de ce que le scénariste avait déjà fait sur le perso lorsqu'il était chez DC.

J'avais été déçu car j'attendais beaucoup de Peter David et de Sal Velluto, que j'ai beaucoup aimé jadis sur Black Panther. A y repenser, ça me paraît correct, mais "juste" correct ne m'a pas suffi à l'époque.
Il est probable que, après tant d'années de disettes sur le personnage, la relire me la ferait revoir sous un angle positif.

A noter un doute sur la « version » du Phantom. Est-ce que ce sera le classique, issu des comic strips de Lee Falk et dont les droits devaient être repris par Moonstone, ou bien celui dérivé des Defenders of the Earth, qui a sa propre continuité (une fille plutôt que des jumeaux, un frère aîné maléfique, des super-pouvoirs) ?
Le doute vient du slip de l’image de Smallwood, loin de la version classique et plus proche de la version Defenders.

Finalement, une recherche sur le site Internet de Moonstone Books (qui semble ne pas avoir de réseaux sociaux) révèle le lancement des nouvelles histoires du Phantom par Mike Bullock en back-up d'un autre titre.
Hélas, le site est "old school" et ne me donne pas d'autres éléments.
J'interroge des spécialistes du Phantom et viendrais en dire plus le cas échéant.

At the Angoulême International Comics Festival Joe Quesada has revealed the ambitious plans for his new Amazing Comics venture. The new publishing outfit was first announced at SDCC 2025.
“Amazing Comics has been living in my creative journal since 2005 — I always knew it was in my future,” said Quesada. “Having the opportunity to help rebuild Marvel and later become part of the Disney family was one of the greatest highlights of my career. It allowed me to play in almost every creative sandbox imaginable and collaborate with some of the most brilliant talents on the planet. Now, I get to take everything I’ve learned over two-plus decades at Marvel and pour it into Amazing Comics, bringing many of those incredible creators along with me. Our mission is simple: to tell great stories with stunning art and to build a true community between Amazing and our readers.”
The slate features comic books written by some of the biggest names in the entertainment and comic book industries, including:
Derek Kolstad, the writer and creator of John Wick and Nobody;
J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of Babylon 5, co-writer of the TV series Sence8, screenwriter of Clint Eastwood’s Changeling and the MCU Thor film;
Steven Paul Judd, the writer on Dark Winds and Echo television shows;
Christopher Priest, legendary writer of Black Panther and Deadpool for Marvel Comics;
Garth Ennis, writer and co-creator of The Boys and Preacher comic books;
Ethan Sacks, writer of Star Wars for Marvel Comics and co-writer of the acclaimed Image Comics series A Haunted Girl;
Charles Dorfman, writer and director of Barbarians, was an Associate Producer on the Academy Award-winning The King’s Speech and producer of the Oscar-nominated The Lost Daughter.
Upcoming Amazing Comics will be illustrated by all-star artists, including Quesada himself, as well as:
Esad Ribic, artist on Marvel’s Secret Wars, Silver Surfer: Requiem, X-Men and Thor for Marvel Comics;
Ryan Stegman, artist on Venom, The King in Black, X-Men, Vanish, and Missionary
Ronan Toulhoat, artist of the immensely popular European albums Daemon and Dog Head
Amazing Comics’ inaugural title, DISCIPLE, was announced last year at Comic-Con International in San Diego by Amazing Comics, Dupuis, and Mad Cave Studios. Quesada and Dorfman will co-write the much-anticipated reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Dorfman will be making his comics debut with the series illustrated by Quesada and inker Wade von Grawbadger, with colorist Richard Isanove and letterer Joe Caramagna.
