Shared at DC FanDome, the concept art features the first look at the suit that will appear in DC's upcoming Blue Beetle film, starring Xolo Mariduena as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, directed by Angel Manuel Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change... a few months later. On Tuesday, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson took to Instagram to reveal that his two DC films in 2022, Black Adam and DC League of Super-Pets, have had their release dates pushed back. Super-Pets will now be released on July 29th, the release date originally held by Black Adam, while Black Adam will be moving to October 21st.

Two more Warner Bros. films, The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, have both been delayed, pushing their release dates to 2023. This follows the news of Black Adam and DC League of Super-Pets also changing their previously announced dates. Jason Momoa's Aquaman 2 will now land on March 17, 2023, while Ezra Miller's multiversal adventure as Flash races to June 23, 2023. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the sequel to Zachary Levi's 2019 film, is moving from 2023 to Dec. 12, 2022. Another Warner Bros. flick, Timothee Chalamet's Willy Wonka, is also receiving a new release date of Dec. 15, 2023.

Je viens de découvrir ça à la radio ce matin :

Batman Autopsie, un podcast exclusif Spotify.

Bruce Wayne, qui semble avoir oublié qu'il est Batman, est médecin légiste dans l'hôpital dirigé par son père et examine les victimes d'un tueur en série qui sévit à Gotham, "le Moissonneur".
Barbara Gordon, inspectrice à la GCPD, se décide de son côté à solliciter l'aide d'Edward Nigma pour résoudre cette série de meurtres, puisque Batman n'est pas là pour le faire.
Bruce Wayne va être attaqué par le Moissonneur en pleine autopsie.

Il y a quelques noms connus au casting comme André Dussolier (Thomas Wayne), Ana Girardot, Thibaut de Montalambert ou encore Sam Karmann (Alfred).

Pour le moment, il n'y a que la bande annonce disponible donc difficile de se faire une idée mais ça devrait sortir dans la journée.

A noter que c'est également dispo en VO sous le titre Batman: Unburied.

• Zaslav a affirmé vouloir privilégier la qualité plutôt que la quantité. Il veut non pas davantage de films, mais des films meilleurs.
• HBO Max et Discovery+ fusionneront en une seule et même plateforme disponible dès l'été prochain aux États-Unis.
• Zaslav confirme être agressivement contre les directives prises par l'ancienne direction et n'hésitera pas à recourir à des mesures drastiques pour corriger les anciennes décisions pour redresser la compagnie.
• Le studio se tournera majoritairement vers le cinéma et non plus le streaming.
• Les contenus familiaux et pour enfants seront réduits.
Concernant DC :
• Zaslav vient de faire de DC la priorité absolue de WBD. Il est en train de mettre en place toute une équipe afin de mettre au point un plan sur 10 ans pour le DCEU, avec la trinité Batman, Superman et Wonder Women en point central de l'univers et une importance sur la qualité. Il veut rendre DC "plus grand".
Il a cité Kevin Feige et la manière Marvel en tant qu'inspiration première.
• DC aura droit à son propre studio indépendant à la manière de Marvel Studios : DC Studios.

Le rôle qu'il va avoir chez DC n'est quand même pas tout à fait le même que celui de réaliser.

J'ai l'impression qu'il est attaché à la continuité qui a commencé à être installée dans l'univers DC cinéma depuis "Man of Steel" (d'ailleurs, les films hors continuité comme les suites de Joker et The Batman ne seront pas supervisées par ses soins) même si le ton sera sans doute moins sérieux que l'approche Snyder.

En tous cas, je pense qu'il n'est pas étranger au retour d'Henry Cavill dans la peau de Superman et c'est déjà une bonne chose.

Arrowverse maestro Greg Berlanti has inked a massive new deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, setting up Berlanti Productions as a mini-studio inside of Warner Bros. Discovery Television and linking Berlanti with Warners at least through 2027. The deal is exclusive to television, with Berlanti still set up at Netflix with a first-look movie deal. The move may come as a surprise to some fans, who expected Berlanti to bow out of his Warner Bros. deal now that The CW is collapsing, bringing the Arrowverse and some of the other shows he produces there to an end.

The DC Studios bosses shared ten projects, talked the exit of Henry Cavill and the potential future of Ezra Miller as The Flash as they introduced a slate of big heroes and lesser known characters. "The stakes are massive for us and for Warner Bros. Discovery," says Safran.

A new Batman movie without Robert Pattinson (but featuring Bruce Wayne’s murderous son). A Superman movie on the release schedule (mark your calendars for July 11, 2025). A Game of Thrones-style drama set on Wonder Woman’s home island of Themyscira (Amazonian palace intrigue). And an animated series already in production (Creature Commandos … wait, what?).

That’s just part of what will be coming to theaters and TV screens as part of DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new slate.

The pair have been busy in the three months since taking over and combining the film and television slate of DC properties, including live-action and animation, as well as gaming. They revamped the way the movie and TV sides do business, cutting ties with projects and creators. A writers room was formed to find an overall story that will launch a unified DC Universe. Creators have been approached. And a plan, at least part of one for what is being billed as Chapter 1: God and Monsters, was formulated and a slate of projects put into development.

DC Shocker: James Gunn, Peter Safran to Lead Film, TV and Animation Division (Exclusive)

Now after ambitiously promising fans that they would have something to show by Feb. 1, Gunn and Safran have unveiled the first part of their slate. It’s a combination of big and known heroes along with lesser-known characters, who may just become big, like the once-obscure heroes of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films over at Marvel Studios. The duo shared their plans Monday with reporters in a petite and tidy screening room on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank.

“One of our strategies is to take our diamond characters, which is Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and we use them to prop up other characters that people don’t know,” explained Gunn.

And continued Safran, “To build those lesser known properties into the diamond properties of tomorrow.”

While plans may yet shift, cautioned the duo, here is initial slate of Chapter 1, in the order they hope it will appear.
Creature commandos

Creature Commandos: An animated seven episode series, written by Gunn, that is already in production. Originally a team of classic monsters assembled to fight Nazis, this is a modern take on the concept. The voice actors have yet to be cast but the executives are looking to find people who can voice the animated characters and also portray the live-action versions when the anti-heroes to show up in movies and shows.

Waller: A spin-off of Gunn’s own HBO Max hit series, Peacemaker, Viola Davis will return as the ruthless and morally ambiguous head of a government task force. It is being written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver, the creator of the Doom Patrol TV series.

Superman: Legacy: The movie featuring the Man of Steel that Gunn is writing and may direct, although no commitments on that end have been made. While the two previous titles are meant to be “aperatifs,” in Safran’s words, Superman is the true kick off for the duo’s DCU plans. “It’s not an origin story,” Safran said. “It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks that kindness as old-fashioned.” A release date of July 11, 2025 has been penciled in.

Lanterns: Greg Berlanti’s long-in-the-works Green Lanterns TV series has been scrapped and the duo have parted ways with the longtime DC series steward. In its place will be a new take on the space cops with power rings. “Our vision for this is very much in the vein of True Detective,” Safran described. “It’s terrestrial-based.” It will feature prominent Lantern heroes Hal Jordan and John Stewart and is one of the most important shows they have in development. “This plays a really big role in leading into the main story we are telling across film and TV.”

The Authority: a movie based on a team of superheroes with rather extreme methods of protecting the planet that first originated in the late 1990s under an influential imprint known as Wildstorm, run by artist and now head of DC publishing, Jim Lee. “One of the things of the DCU is that it’s not just a story of heroes and villains,” said Gunn. “Not every film and TV show is going to be about good guy vs. bad guy, giant things from the sky comes and good guy wins. There are white hats, black hats and grey hats.” Added Safran: “They are kinda like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men. They know that you want them on the wall. Or at least they believe that.”

Paradise Lost: The duo describe this HBO Max series as a Game of Thrones-style drama set on the all-female island that is Wonder Woman’s birthplace, Themyscira, filled with political intrigue and scheming between power players. It takes place before the events of the Wonder Woman films.

The Brave and the Bold: “This is the introduction of the DCU Batman,” said Gunn. “Of Bruce Wayne and also introduces our favorite Robin, Damian Wayne, who is a little son of a bitch.” The movie will take inspiration from the now-classic Batman run written by Grant Morrison that introduced Batman to a son he never knew existed: a murderous tween raised by assassins. “It’s a very strange father-and-son story.”

And, importantly, it will feature a Batman not played by Robert Pattinson…

The Batman sequel: Pattinson will continue to portray the Dark Knight in at least one more crime saga movie directed by Matt Reeves. That movie, the executives revealed, will be released Oct. 3, 2025 and is being titled The Batman Part II.

“2025 is going to be a very big year for DC,” crowed Safran. “Superman and Batman within the same year.”

Booster Gold: an HBO Max series based on a unique and lower-tiered hero created in 1986. Safran said of the series, “It’s about a loser from the future who uses basic future technology to come back to today and pretend to be a superhero.” Gunn described it as “imposter syndrome as superhero.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow: Taking its cues from the recent Tom King-written mini-series, this movie project promises to have a different take than what most think of when the idea of Superman’s cousin comes to mind. “We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth. She is much more hardcore and not the Supergirl we’re used to.”

Swamp Thing: a horror film that promises to close out the first part of the first chapter.

Before audiences get to those films and series, however, there is a matter of this year’s crop movies, starting with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, coming March 17, and continuing with The Flash (June 16), Blue Beetle (Aug. 18), and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (Dec. 25).

The duo are high on the quartet, made by the previous film regime and under the aegis of DC Films, run by former head Walter Hamada. Gunn calls The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti, “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.”

He also said the four leads of those films could potentially continue playing their leading roles in DCU projects down the line. “There is nothing that prohibits that from happening,” said Gunn.

Among those actors is Ezra Miller, the troubled star of The Flash who has found themselves in several criminal investigations, and pled guilty to trespassing earlier this month, but who also told studio executives that they were getting help.

Safran said the executives remained hopeful Miller was on a path to betterment. “Ezra is completely committed to their recovery. We are fully supportive of that journey they are on right now. When the time is right, when they are ready to have that discussion, we will all figure out what the best path forward. But right now, they are completely focused on their recovery. And in our conversation with them, in the last couple of months, it feels like they are making enormous progress.”

The duo discussed their approach to casting, whether it was returning or new actors. The TV series will look to cast actors who will also play the parts on the big screen. Just as John Cena played the violent figure Peacemaker in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad then in the Peacemaker series, anyone cast in Hal Jordan and John Stewart in Lanterns, for example, will then cross-over into the films.

“We don’t want the series to feel in any way like step-children or lesser than,” said Gunn. “It’s just another way to tell a story.” (They like being able to spend eight hours digging deep into certain characters.)

And they took on the touchy subject of Henry Cavill, tipped to return as Superman thanks for a cameo in last year’s Black Adam, but who in the end, will not return as Superman, much to the chagrin of a vocal fanbase.

“We didn’t fire Henry. Henry was never cast,” said Gunn. “For me, it’s about who do I want to cast as Superman and who do the filmmakers we have want to cast. And for me, for this story, it isn’t Henry.”

He added: “I like Henry, I think he’s a great guy. I think he’s getting dicked around by a lot of people, including the former regime at this company. But this Superman is not Henry, for a number of reasons.”

And the executives also tried to walk the line of if and how to deal with actors who stepped into controversy, with Shazam!‘s Zachary Levi being the most recent example. On the weekend, Levi tweeted words against pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, known for its COVID-19 vaccine, which many interpreted as the actor having anti-vaccine views.

“Actors, filmmakers that I work with are going to say things that I agree with, and things that I don’t agree with,” said Gunn, who in 2018 was temporarily fired by Disney as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to old, offensive tweets. “I can’t be changing my plans all the time because an actor says something that I don’t agree with. At the same token, if someone is doing something that is morally reprehensible, that’s a different story. And we have to take that into account.”

Though the duo are working in one DC Universe, some stories will stand apart. Reeves’ Batman movies and Todd Phillips’s sequel to the Joker will fall under a banner titled DC Elseworlds, which will, just as in the comics, fall outside the larger continuity of the DCU. The Black Superman project, being written by Ta-Nehisi Coates under the previous regime, remains in active development and would also fall under that category. Teen Titans Go, the popular and long-running cartoon series on Cartoon Network also falls under that banner, the duo said.

“The bar is going to be very high for projects to be outside the DCU, the Elseworlds projects,” explained Safran. “But every now and then there will be something that lives up to that.”

The duo are putting a premium on screenplay writing, saying that would prevent the dreaded feeling of “superhero fatigue” and also give the projects a tonal and thematic difference from each other. Gunn called out the degradation of screenwriters in Hollywood and also said that the duo wanted to be respectful of the voice of filmmakers they were working with … up to a point.

“It’s not the Gunnverse, it’s not,” Gunn said. “It’s got to be all these different feels from all these different stories. That’s what makes it so fun. The stories are completely different and each has the individual expression of the writers and the director that are making those projects.”

But, he added, “We’re not stupid. Not every filmmaker is going to be happy. Because if someone is doing something that isn’t working, we’re going to be honest.”

Gunn and Safran’s hirings were the culmination of over a half year quest by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to find someone to lead a screen division of DC. In his own words, Zaslav was looking for a ”Kevin Feige,” the storied and successful head of rival Marvel Studios, who has led the Disney-owned company a seemingly an endless string of hits, all the while telling a unified and interconnected story. Gunn became an A-list filmmaker under Feige, who hired him to direct 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but he was quick to note this is not a Marvel redux: “A lot of people are thinking this is Marvel 2.0. It’s not.”

“Zaslav had a vision in mind of a standalone studio that would have everything DC centralized,” said Safran. “And that was the appeal for us, coming in and having access to any character, any story, and to tell the stories we wanted to tell across all the mediums.”

As Gunn said, “the history of DC is pretty messed up,” referring to the turmoil and dysconnectivity that has roiled DC plans of Warner Bros. Pictures for the last dozen or so years. There was filmmaker Zack Snyder’s multi-movie universe that sputtered half way through. There was an attempted course correction by Joss Whedon, that maybe made things worse. There the several changes in studio leadership and ownership. And there was the Arrowverse, the successful if niche TV side of DC that aired for over a decade on the CW.

“No one was minding the mint,” says Gunn. “They were giving away IP like they were party favors at any creator who smiled at them.”

For Gunn, being handed the keys to a comic book universe are like something out of a childhood dream.
Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, Gunn described himself as “a lost, screwed up kid” who didn’t feel like he belonged.

His father and mother were so concerned that they sent him to a psychiatrist who advised them to take interest in his interests. Which happened to be reading, writing, and drawing comic books. In one attempt at connecting, Gunn’s father took him to Creation Comic Con, a big comic convention in Chicago. It remains the best weekend he’s ever had, a time that solidified a magic and connection to the medium and its colorful characters.

Gunn now wants to bring that magic and connection to moviegoing and TV watching audiences by revamping DC Studios in a way that hasn’t been done before.

“I have an incredibly deep connection to these characters, to these stories, and to wanting to create that type of magic not only in the kid that I was, but in the connection that I had with my father, with friends later on,” Gunn explained. “And wanting to create a unified world in DC where we tell stories.”

In the end, both Gunn and Safran know not only what is at stake but also the enormous opportunity being presented to them. For Safran, it’s the chance to impact and change the culture, be it the company culture of how it approaches storytelling to the broader pop culture.

Gunn lit up in giddiness at the pure magic of it all.

“This is a not only a once in a lifetime opportunity, it’s a once opportunity. It’s me, now. No one has ever gotten to do this before. And how could I say no to that?

From the days of Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC has understood the importance of new starts, taking our favorite superheroes in unexpected new directions and establishing a DC Universe that reflects the world of today. It’s certainly been true for our comics, and it’s equally true for our many movies and TV series.

Last year, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that blockbuster filmmaker James Gunn and producer extraordinaire Peter Safran had been hired as Co-Chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios, the new studio tapped with overseeing all DC film, TV, animation and game projects going forward. Since then, of course, DC fans have all pretty much been wondering the same thing: what new movies and TV series are they working on?

Well, the wait is over DC fans! Gunn and Safran have unveiled the first ten interconnected DC Studios projects—five movies and five HBO Max TV series. And yes, we said interconnected. All ten of them are set within the same shared universe and will frequently share characters. However, while not included below, there will be films set outside the shared continuity—like the already announced Joker: Folie à Deux from director Todd Phillips and Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman sequel.

“The DCU’s a multiverse, but we’re going to be focusing on one universe from that multiverse,” explains Safran. “And if something isn’t DCU, we’re going to make that very clear. So, strictly adult fare like Todd Phillips’ Joker, or kids animation like Teen Titans Go!, we’re going to make it very clear that those are DC Elseworlds, just the same way that they do it in the comic books.”

But the focus today is on the core, connected DC Universe and the initial shows and TV series that will help it take shape on the screen. Familiar characters like Superman and Batman are obviously represented, but Gunn, Safran and the creative teams they’ve been working with are pulling from unexpected corners of the DC Universe as well.

“Here at DC, we have Metropolis, Gotham, Themyscira, Atlantis, Bialya… This is the world that we’re creating,” Gunn shares. “We’re coming into a world where superheroes exist and have existed for some time in one form or another, and that’s the universe. We are telling a big, huge central story that is like Marvel, except that I think we’re a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we’ve gotten a group of writers together to work the story out completely.”

While all ten of the below projects are in active development, some are further along than others and both Gunn and Safran emphasize that things may shift around.

“What we’re starting with today is the first part of the first chapter of our universe,” reveals Safran. “That first chapter’s called ‘Gods and Monsters.’ Many of the following projects are already being worked on, but we’re remaining flexible and we’re going to adjust because we’re never going to put a project into production before the script is right. This is a general timeline, but there will be flexibility within it.”

Below, both Gunn and Safran share some details and the thought behind the ten new DC movies and TV series revealed today.

Creature Commandos

Animated HBO Max series

James Gunn: The first series that we’re doing, and I’ve already written the entire series, is Creature Commandos. This is an animated TV series and this is art from the animation company that’s doing it. Creature Commandos is based on the great team from DC.

What we’re doing with the DCU is we’re having animation tied directly into live action. Television, movies and games all intertwine within the same universe. We’re going to cast actors that are going to be able to play the characters in this, as well as in other things, some of which we’ve already cast. I’ve written all seven episodes of this show and it’s in production now.

Gunn: Viola Davis is coming back as her character, Amanda Waller. This is also going to have some of the Peacemaker team in it as regulars on the show. This basically follows up Peacemaker. We have two great creatives working on it: Christal Henry, who was a writer on Watchmen, and Jeremy Carver who created Doom Patrol. They have this incredibly marvelous story worked out that I think is really fantastic.

Peter Safran: This series will sit between Peacemaker season one and season two.

Superman: Legacy

Live action movie

Safran: (This) is really the launch of the DCU. The first two projects are an amuse-bouche for what’s coming up with Superman: Legacy. James is currently writing it. We’re hoping that he will direct it. It’s not an origin story. It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.

Gunn: With our stories, we want to take it away from good guy vs. bad guy. There are really good—almost saintly—people and Superman is among them. There are really terrible villains like Gorilla Grodd or the Joker. And then there’s everybody in between them, so there are all these shades of gray which allow us to tell complex stories.

Safran: And we have a release date for this—July 11, 2025.

Lanterns

Live action HBO Max series

Safran: Our next project is another television series. We call it Lanterns and it is starring two of our favorite Green Lanterns—Hal Jordan and John Stewart. It’s going to be with HBO Max, as all of our series are that we’re going to talk about today. It is more of a True Detective-type mystery with our two Lanterns. A terrestrial-based mystery—

Gunn: —that leads into the overall story that we’re telling throughout the different movies and television shows. We find this ancient horror on Earth, and these guys are basically supercops on “Precinct Earth.”

Safran: The story is going to weave back and forth between the films and the television shows. Peacemaker is a good example of how that works, and that’s what we’re going to do with this big overarching story that we’re telling.

The Authority

Gunn: This is one of my real passion projects. I’ve been working really hard on it with the writers and we’re starting to put together the entire story. This is a big movie. I don’t know how many of you are familiar with the Authority. They’re WildStorm characters. WildStorm was a comics imprint that was bought by DC that I really love. We’re moving a lot of these WildStorm characters into the DCU.

The Authority’s a very different kind of superhero story. They are basically good-intentioned, but they think that the world is completely broken and the only way to fix it is to take things into their own hands, whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments—basically, whatever they want to do to make the world better. We’ll see how that journey goes for them.

There are morally gray characters (in our DCU), of which these are.

PS: We love that they think the ends justify the means and they’re the ones that decide what the right ends are.

Paradise Lost

Safran: This is a Game of Thrones-type story about Themyscira/Paradise Island, home of the Amazons and the birthplace of Wonder Woman. This involves all of the darkness, drama and political intrigue behind this society of only women.

Gunn: It’s an origin story of how this society of women came about. What does it mean? What are their politics like? What are their rules? Who’s in charge? What are the games that they play with each other to get to the top? I think it’s really exciting.

Safran: The events really take place before Diana’s birth.

The Brave and the Bold

Gunn: This is the introduction of the DCU’s Batman. It is not Robert Pattinson. It is not Ben Affleck. We’re working with Robert on The Batman – Part II with Matt Reeves, and we’re working with Ben Affleck, who has been a part of our team trying to bring things together and he really wants to direct one of our projects. We’re excited for him to do that.

This is a story of Damian Wayne, who’s Batman’s actual son that he didn’t know existed for the first eight to ten years of his life. He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He’s my favorite Robin. It’s based on the Grant Morrison comic run, which is one of my favorite Batman runs. We’re putting it all together right now.

Safran: This is going to feature other members of the extended Bat-Family. Just because we feel like they’ve been left out of the Batman stories in the theater for far too long.

Booster Gold

Live action HBO Max series

Safran: A total fan favorite, as you know. A loser from the future who uses his basic future technology to come back to today to pretend to be a superhero.

Gunn: I think of it as basically the story of a superhero’s imposter syndrome. How do you deal with that? (It’s about) how he tries to use this future technology to be loved by the people of today and what is really at the base of that. It’s a character story that’s going to be a very different type of show, and we’re talking to an actor about it now.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Gunn: This is based on Tom King (and Bilquis Evely)’s wonderful comic. Tom has been one of the architects of this entire situation. He’s been one of the guys in the room with us, along with four or five other writers. I love his take on these characters. He just turns them slightly to be something very unique.

In our story, we have Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents. Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet and she lived there for the first fourteen years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more f*cked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far.

Swamp Thing

Safran: The final film we wanted to talk about is Swamp Thing. We bring it up because it’s important to point out that in these stories, although they’re interconnected, they’re not all tonally the same. Each set of filmmakers bring their own aesthetic to these films, and the fun is seeing how these tonally different works mash up in the future.

This is a film that will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing.

Gunn: We are actually developing a few other things as well, but for one reason or another, we can’t say them. This is the first batch of stuff, but there may be a couple of surprises to come.

The recently hired Co-Chairmen and CEOs of the new DC Studios have the weight of the universe on their shoulders—the DC Universe, that is. But it’s okay, they have plenty of superhero friends they can call on for assistance, from Superman and Batman, to Swamp Thing and Booster Gold, to…well, pretty much everyone ever created for DC.

Since being placed in charge of DC’s upcoming slate of films and TV series, the two newly minted execs had to hit the ground running, kickstarting the development process for their first batch of projects—ten of which were announced this morning—while shepherding already existing DC films and TV shows forward. Unsurprisingly, finding ways for it all to coexist was not without its challenges, but by Gunn’s own admission, they were aided by some good fortune.

“I think that we’ve gotten lucky with the next four movies because we have Shazam, which leads into Flash, which resets everything, which then goes into Blue Beetle, which is totally disconnected (from everything that came before) and can be a part of the DCU, which goes into Aquaman, which leads into Superman: Legacy, our first big project,” he explains. “But the one thing that we can promise is that everything from our first project forward will be canon and will be connected. We’re using some actors from the past, we’re not using other actors from the past, but everything from that moment forward will be connected and consistent.”

A key part of DC’s film and television on the near horizon amounts to a combination of both new and already established. Along with new projects like Superman: Legacy, Creature Commandos, The Brave and the Bold and The Authority, fans can expect a few highly anticipated follow-ups, like director Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, which got a release date today of October 3, 2025.

It’s a lot to keep track of, even for superfans like us, so Gunn and Safran recently answered some questions about everything brewing at DC Studios to help give fans a sense of how it will all come together.

On why a shared universe is the right approach going forward…

Peter Safran: DC has had great individual movies over the years, but we think that what the audience really appreciates and needs is a connected universe. It minimizes audience confusion and it maximizes their connectivity to it across all the platforms.

James Gunn: I think that’s something that people love. I know that from my own experience. But again, we do have Elseworlds tales we’re telling. The bar for an Elseworlds tale is going to be higher than the bar for a movie within the DCU. Not that we’re not always going to have a high bar, but it’s got to be something really special for us to tell that story outside of our regular continuity and to spend the money to make it.

On how many movies they’re aiming for each year…

Safran: Probably two movies and two HBO Max series per year.

About how they decide which medium to use for which project…

Gunn: It’s all story-based. To us, storytelling is 100% king. So, if it’s a story that’s more complicated, like the Lanterns or Waller story, or has more of an independent TV vibe, like Booster Gold, then that’s more suited for television. It has to do with tone, storytelling and if it’s something that we can tell in two hours and ten minutes. Or is it something that we need seven, eight or nine hours for?

Safran: We certainly debated a couple of these projects and where they fit better, but ultimately, this is where we landed.

On how they decide on ratings and whether something should be live action or animated…

Gunn: It depends on the story. We’re going to give every story what it deserves. Some things we know. Superman is definitely something we know we’d like to be PG-13, so I’m going to make sure it is. Other things, like the Waller TV show, are a little bit more mature. And we have other things that are aimed a bit more at young women or at kids that are still within this world.

Safran: And in terms of animation, it’s sometimes just a fun way to introduce characters or introduce stories that would frankly be too expensive to be done otherwise.

Gunn: Creature Commandos is a good example of that.

Safran: With Creature Commandos, they’re all digital characters.

On whether they’re planning any big, Justice League-type crossover events…

Gunn: Everything’s crossing over throughout. These characters are all interacting throughout the different stories.

Now, it doesn’t necessarily mean always. Brave and the Bold may just be Batman, Robin and the characters involved in that. But I know a lot of other times these characters cross around. In Creature Commandos, one of the main characters shows up in Waller.

About the role of that games might play in the shared universe…

Gunn: It’s not like we’re going to have the Superman movie come out and have this Superman game come out. It’s more like we’ll have the Superman film come out, then maybe two years later, we have the Supergirl movie coming out. So, what’s the story in between there? Is there a Krypto game that we can play that comes in between them? Something that’s still set in the world with these characters, but is its own thing. We want to give the prominence to games that they deserve.

Whether Matt Reeves’ Batman films will continue…

Gunn: Yes. Matt is working on The Batman – Part II, which he thinks of as a Batman crime saga that also includes the Penguin TV series. The Batman is its own thing. Matt’s hard at work on it. He came in and pitched us some amazing stuff the other day, so our plan is for that to continue.

Safran: Also, The Batman’s not a stepchild. It’s all under DC. We are fully invested in the success of The Batman just like we are everything else.

Gunn: Of course, everything’s going to be balanced so The Brave and the Bold is not going to be coming out in the same six month period as The Batman.

About the Jason Momoa Lobo rumors…

Gunn: Jason will not play two characters.

Safran: It’s too early to say. Jason always thought Aquaman was a trilogy in his own mind, but he also loves Lobo. He’s been very clear about that too. He’s never going to play two characters…

Gunn: …but we’ll figure it out after Aquaman 2.

On whether the animated movies from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will continue…

Gunn: We’re dealing with all that. Some of that stuff will continue as Elseworlds, but a lot of other stuff we’re starting to bring into animation with (Warner Bros. Animation President) Sam Register so that we’ll have things that are connected with this. I think there have been a lot of really marvelous DC cartoons, so we’re going to keep moving forward with that.

On whether they had to make any changes to The Flash…

Safran: We had input on it for sure, but there’s nothing we had to do in order to set up our universe.

Gunn: We’re very close to Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, the director and producer of The Flash. Andy’s going to be doing some more stuff for us.

About the writers helping to build this story and universe…

Gunn: We have Tom King. He has been my partner throughout all of this. He was giving me answers to sh*t before I took the job. So it’s me; him; Christal Henry, who worked on Watchmen; Christina Hodson, who wrote The Flash; Drew Goddard, who you probably know; and Jeremy Slater, who just did Moon Knight. That’s the group of people we’ve been meeting with and putting all of this together.

On the difference between DC Studios projects…

Gunn: Even though this is all a connected universe, it’s really important to me that the individual writers and directors on the projects give their own self-expression to it, just like they do in the comics. Everything doesn’t always look the same. Everything doesn’t always have the same expression. Different artists bring remarkably different looks, feels and tones. This is not the Gunnverse.

I want each project to have the feelings of the individual artist that’s working on it and to give them a lot of freedom—as long as it works—to create something special because what I’ve found through Marvel, what wasn’t exciting was when movies were tonally the same. What was exciting was when you had something like Guardians come out and everyone was like, “How is this raccoon going to be dealing with this God of Thunder? That’s going to be weird.”

But then when you actually see the mash-up happen, that’s what makes it so fun. So, to see seemingly tonally incongruent things come together is part of the fun of all this.

Mais oui, le DCEU 2013-2023 est l'Alpha et l'Omega de la gestion loupée. Mais d'autres franchises galèrent et, au fond, je me demande si les spectateurs actuels ne se lassent pas des immenses franchises.

En toute honnêteté, même moi ca me saoule de devoir attendre 5 ou 6 ans et me taper 15 films et séries TV de maigre qualité pour avoir la fin d'une intrigue. Cela a fonctionné une fois avec Avengers Endgame parce que, bon c'était nouveau et ca envoyait du lourd avec Spider-Man, Cap, Thor et IM, mais là, avec Miss Marvel ou le remplaçant de Captain America, c'est quand-même beaucoup moins attrictif. Le COVID est passé par là. Et la faignaserie des auteurs aussi. En revanche, les grosses franchises continuent de marcher (Batman, Joker) si c'est assez solo. Le DCU quand à lui c'est un autre problème : avoir donné intégralement les clefs à Snyder qui n'a jamais réussi, en termes de spectateur, à décoller et changer totalement d'optique en cours de route a totalement déstabilisé les gens. Et puis, punaise, quelle qualité moisie. entre Black Adam, Shazam 2 ou The Flash, c'est du n'importe quoi total. Et en plus rendu caduc par la nouvelle direction. Aller voir un film médiocre dont le seul motif d'existence était de surfer sur la nostalgie des années 90 et de montrer des personnages d'autres films, quand on sait que ces personnages n'existent plus, ca ne peut pas fonctionner. Maintenant, attention, avec Black Adam, Shazam et Flash, Warner va perdre énormément d'argent... Est-ce que cela ne va pas limiter les options de Gunn ? Pas sûr !
De toute façon, faire des prévisions de film sur 4 ou 5 ans avec les soucis des acteurs, c'est n'importe quoi. Dernier exemple en date, le mec qui joue Kang. Tu bases ta décennie sur lui et ... bim... Idem avec le regretté Black Panther et Ezra Miller. Faut arrêter de prévoir à long terme. Perso, j'ai plus envie d'aller voir un film Captain america même si c'est plus l'acteur d'origine qu'un film Captain America/Faucon qui assure soi-disant une transistion. Ce qui ne veut pas dire que le film va être mauvais, mais qu'il attirera moins les gens.

Sur les chiffres au box-office du 10: outre la lassitude, je pense que découper l'histoire en plusieurs parties est un repoussoir, justement pour une séance no-brain tu cherches pas une histoire sans vraie fin.

Et pour les autres films de super-héros, pour Marvel il y a la difficulté de relancer la machine avec des personnages secondaires des premiers films et sans aucun acteur d'envergure.

Il y a quand même pas mal de films de super-héros dont l'intrigue fonctionne sur un seul film malgré les références au passé ou certaines intrigues ouvertes.

L'erreur du DCU a été de vouloir essayer de reproduire la formule Marvel à partir de Justice League.

On pense ce qu'on veut de Snyder mais ses films étaient tellement clivants qu'au moins, à chaque fois, ça faisait un énorme buzz avec de nombreux débats sur les réseaux sociaux, ce qui faisait une pub phénoménale et qui donnait envie de se faire sa propre opinion.

Au début du MCU, il y avait aussi le frisson de découvrir les super-héros en chair et en os dans des films avec des SFX à la hauteur. On est maintenant tellement habitué que ce "frisson" est passé.

L'autre point, c'est que les films de super-héros sont de plus en plus formatés donc je vois plutôt ça d'un bon oeil que certains réalisateurs avec une vision plus personnelle soient annoncés comme James Mangold pour Swamp Thing.

Du coup, je suppose que tu ne lis plus de séries comics ongoing et que tu ne regardes plus de séries TV ?
En gros, que tu as abandonné le suivi d'un récit feuilletonnesque ?
Car ce que tu reproches là n'est que le transfert au cinéma de la gestion feuilletonnesque d'une intrigue, un mode de narration si populaire que cela a infusé tous les types d'histoires.

The Batman de Matt Reeves est un succès mais pas un triomphe. C'est un succès mais pas une réussite. Le Joker est sorti avant le COVID et sa suite sera un vrai test.
Je ne suis pas sûr-sûr que des personnages / franchises tellement usitées peuvent encore déclencher des réussites et triomphes.
Depuis 2012, donc en onze ans, nous avons eu trois Batman et deux Joker. C'est beaucoup. Ca lasse.

Tout va dépendre de Superman Legacy. Warner multiplie les échecs programmés, qu'ils gèrent via le rachat et les avantages fiscaux.

Oui, enfin le MCU a basé la période 2012-2019 (je dis 2012 car c'est la sortie de The Avengers et c'est suite à cette réussite [dépassement du milliard] que la trame Infinity a été lancée et confirmée) sur les Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans et Chris Hemsworth et ça a parfaitement fonctionné.
Le décès de Chadwick Boseman est un drame, mais imprévu car, si je ne lui jette pas la pierre, l'acteur a malgré tout caché son affection à son employeur, qui hélas a subi autant sa disparition sur le plan humain que sur le plan logistique (que faire, alors que son T'Challa partait pour diriger le MCU ?).
Ezra Miller ne devait pas porter le DCEU et son film a été transformé pour jouer la carte du Multivers, par opportunisme.

Le MCU est fort embêté avec Jonathan Majors, et Tenoch Huerta dans une moindre mesure, mais c'est un coup de "pas de bol" même si c'était trop de tout miser sur un adversaire. Alors que la méthode 2012-2019 pariait sur une Trinité, avec Josh Brolin n'arrivant que très tard comme Thanos dans l'ensemble (2018-2019).

Oui. Même si le décès de Chadwick Boseman et l'accueil "froid" d'une partie du public vindicative envers Brie Larson ont aussi coupé l'herbe sous le pied du MCU.
A mon sens, l'erreur principale du MCU, au-delà pour moi de parier sur le Multivers qui est un jouet amusant mais vite lassant, c'est de ne pas organiser de réunion des personnages (nouveaux et anciens) avant le diptyque Kang Dynasty / Secret Wars.
Avant Infinity War / Endgame, le MCU a d'abord fait The Avengers puis Age of Ultron et même Civil War. Avec Infinity War / Endgame, les personnages étaient vus, connus et se connaissaient même pour la plupart. Là, Kang Dynasty / Secret Wars va devoir raconter une histoire cosmique lourde ET présenter les personnages entre eux.
On a vu dans Justice League que ça ne fonctionne pas bien.

Pour DC, la plus grosse erreur a été de vouloir faire des films avec des blagues nulles à la Marvel.
Le film Justice League version Snyder en souffre : j'adore cette version de quatre heures, c'est très stylé, mais les dialogues débiles du style "j'ai racheté la banque", cela n'apporte rien.
J'ai vu très récemment le film The Batman : je ne suis pas fan de la chauve-souris (Doop peut en témoigner :beu:), mais j'ai adoré.
ENFIN un film de Batman qui ne passe pas son temps à se bastonner, mais qui endosse le rôle de détective.
Et surtout, pas de blague à la con.

Pour Marvel, la plus grosse bourde n'est pas d'avoir choisi untel pour incarner Kang, mais tout simplement le fait d'avoir décidé que Kang serait le prochain gros vilain.
Dans les comics, Kang est un gros guignol qui se fait fumer par Dr Fatalis, et dont Thanos se fout royalement (alors que ce dernier se méfie comme de la peste du tyran de latvérie).
Kang, c'est à mes yeux le Terry Long des super-vilains Marvel.

MCU vs DCU .... (et je ne parlerais pas des séries, qui m'ennuient encore plus que les films -- et les personnes qui connaissent ma façon de vision savent quand un truc me plait ou pas... )

Bon, pour commencer posons les bases.... plus je vieillis plus mon point de rupture sur le Suspension of Disbelief est bas. (et pas que ça)

donc, les premiers flms ont bien entendus éveillés ma curiosité , mais aujourd'hui que reste-t-il de ses films dans ma mémoire??? pas grand chose. (Je gardes de biens meilleurs souvenirs du X-Men de Singer, de Blade, de la LoEG (pourtant une anti-thèse du comics), des Mystery Men, Superman 1 (Christopher Reeves) ... ). Autres époques, autre façon d'écrire, et surtout de réaliser.

Trop d'effets spéciaux, trop de grandiloquence dans la façon, et bien trop de vide dans l'histoire, et de trou qu'un emmental.

Le roman feuilletonesque, a 2 écoles...
on va pouvoir mettre Balzac, Sue, Souvestre (pour les Français) dans la première catégorie...

et la seconde catégorie va tout chercher dans les télénovelas .... et la décompression du récitatif ...

et aujourd'hui les films sont étendus au delà de la rupture sur des durées toujours plus longue , non pas pour une intrigue palpitante (elle tiendrais bien souvent sur un mini post-it) mais pour faire montre des nouvelles capacités de tel ou tel autre outil informatique pour générer de "meilleurs" effets que son voisin ...

et moi une histoire vide, ca ne me parle pas.. des effets en veux tu en voila, ça me gave à un point... que j'en ai fait une indigestion il y a bien plus de 10 ans.

Après , au regard des mes lectures chez les 2 gros , c'et vrai que les titres achetés chez eux sont réduits à peau de chagrin, que je tape bien plus volontiers chez les indés (et pas que DH ou Image) ou même une série qui dure comme le Dragon de Larsen, malgré ses coté over-the-top par moment, avance, et passe toujours à autre chose, sans tomber dans le télénovelas (ou alors de façon Porno Trash).

Un méchant, c'est ce qu'on en fait.
Le MCU a fait de Thanos, "amoureux de la Mort", un éco-terroriste au discours porteur à la fin de la décennie 2010.
Je suis persuadé que le MCU aurait su quoi faire d'un Kang le Conquérant s'ils avaient fait les choses correctement ; ce qui n'est pas le cas. A faire mumuse avec le jouet du Multivers, on a un Kang qui apparaît d'abord par un Variant grandiloquent dans Loki, puis un Variant qui se dit invincible mais se fait vaincre par Ant-Man (!), puis une quantité de Variants aux looks peu travaillés.

Ca n'est pas une bonne approche.
Thanos a aussi fonctionné car, entre 2012 et 2018, quelques films ont fait "monter" la pression le concernant : The Avengers, le premier Guardians of the Galaxy, la fin de Age of Ultron, et les indices sur les Pierres d'Infini.
Les personnages avaient peur de Thanos avant que le public le voit vraiment en action. Et, d'ailleurs, la première vraie scène d'action de Thanos, il tabasse Hulk ; bon sang, mais quelle maîtrise pour forger l'aura d'un personnage.

Kang, il débute avec un Variant dans une série dérivée (et l'on voit désormais que la stratégie de diversifier entre cinéma et séries ne paye pas / n'emporte pas l'adhésion des gens), puis il est battu par Ant-Man. Dans un film qui brise la dynamique des films Ant-Man (jusque-là de sympathiques films de casse familiaux), ce qui ne convient ni aux fans de ces films (pas forcément grisés par une saga cosmique), ni à ceux intéressés juste par Kang (qu'ils voient perdre, et qu'ils ne voulaient pas forcément voir dans Ant-Man).
Si le MCU tenait tant que ça à intégrer Kang via Ant-Man, autant y aller et donner une sale défaite à Scott Lang, a minima pour montrer que Kang en impose.
Mais non.

Dans une décennie 2020 qui poursuit aussi, au fond, la quête d'ultra-réussite personnelle et l'impératif chez beaucoup de "réussir", de "conquérir" une carrière et une vie, je suis sûr qu'un Kang le Conquérant aurait pu parler.
Mais, encore une fois, c'est amené avec les pieds.

Le score de Mission:Impossible sera en ce sens révélateur du goût ou non pour la division de l'intrigue / le feuilleton au cinéma.

Je pense que ça va quand même marcher, car contrairement aux Fast tout le monde croit que c'est la vraie fin des Mission Impossible avec Cruise, que ce ne sera certainement pas étalé sur un 3ème film (alors que cette andouille de Diesel tease ça alors que c'est catastrophique), et que la promo et la médiatisation des cascades de Cruise sont allées crescendo depuis que McQuarrie réalise.



Sauf que les résultats au box-office sont très légers, en fait, au vu de l'investissement financier et en personnages.
Un film Batman + Superman + Wonder Woman (mise dans la promo'), pour la première fois, qui ne dépasse pas le milliard à l'époque, c'est une anomalie.

Les Fast évoquent un feuilleton "conclusif" qui n'en sera rien et bricole des spin-offs qui semblent finalement assez proches des tie-ins en comics. Le futur Fast & Furious Present: Hobbs & Reyes est clairement l'idée d'un tie-in à un event comics, où on voit comme Hobbs va arriver comme ça dans le 11e.
Les M:I présentent un feuilleton final pour tout terminer. Mais même là, on peut être curieux du résultat, d'autant que les M:I ont toujours été autonomes voire indépendants entre eux.

Même réflexe que pour Terminator Salvation : réduire la durée pour maximiser la diffusion (moins de film = plus de séances calées dans la journée), ici parce que les projections tests n'étaient pas enthousiastes.
Ce n'est pas pour rien si l'ultime bande-annonce balance Wonder Woman et Doomsday. Warner a tout donné pour attirer le spectateur ; et pas vraiment.

Je pense sincèrement que BvS n'est pas un film grand public qui en lui-même aurait pu passer le milliard.
(c'est parce que Zack Snyder n'est pas un cinéaste grand public)
(et parce que BvS, même long, n'est pas un bon film pour moi)

The Batman de Matt Reeves est un succès mais pas un triomphe. C'est un succès mais pas une réussite. Le Joker est sorti avant le COVID et sa suite sera un vrai test.
Je ne suis pas sûr-sûr que des personnages / franchises tellement usitées peuvent encore déclencher des réussites et triomphes.
Depuis 2012, donc en onze ans, nous avons eu trois Batman et deux Joker. C'est beaucoup. Ca lasse.

Le décès de Chadwick Boseman est un drame, mais imprévu car, si je ne lui jette pas la pierre, l'acteur a malgré tout caché son affection à son employeur, qui hélas a subi autant sa disparition sur le plan humain que sur le plan logistique (que faire, alors que son T'Challa partait pour diriger le MCU ?).

Le recaster plutôt que de nous introduire à la truelle un nouveau T'Challa fils de ... caché et qui a le même nom... quelle honte !

Je trouve pour ma part que le format serial se retrouve plus dans le mcu que dans l univers Marvel comics...

Mcu par obligation car les acteurs vieillissent ou on d autres projets et bien les personnages évoluent vraiment... de plus le nombre limité de projet fait qu il peut y avoir plus facilement des liens clairs entre ces projets...

Marvel comics... Peter à été journaliste, à écrit un livre à travailler pour Stark pour je ne sais combien de labos, à été prof, a été milliardaire, à déménagé 250 fois et il a toujours 25 ans.

Marvel marche par run, chaque run annulant quasiment le précédent en renouvelant le cast et le statut quo.

Dans le Mcu j ai plus l impression d un univers partagé que dans les comics.

C'est sûr, mais si cette lassitude est plus dure à obtenir, elle demeure réelle.
The Batman est vendu comme un film "méga dark" et glauque, quasiment ce qu'une grosse partie des spectateurs actuels veut. Et ça ne touche pas le milliard, voire même pas 800 millions.
Même avec le monde post COVID, c'est "peu".

Quand même. C'est juste que le MCU a mal géré l'après Endgame, et a mal géré de miser sur un super-vilain, et un seul acteur.
Clairement, miser sur Robert Downey Jr littéralement revenu de l'enfer avec Iron Man, c'était "assuré" : l'acteur était alors trop intelligent pour se griller encore.

Ca n'aurait pas été accepté par le public.
Nous trentenaires/quadragénaires blancs sans souci financier structurel sous-estimons l'impact sur les communautés noires dans le monde du film Black Panther, et de l'acteur Chadwick Boseman.
C'était le porte-drapeau, l'étendard. Le héraut de ces communautés.

Le remplacer aurait impliqué qu'il était parmi d'autres ; ce que ces communautés ne ressentaient pas, du tout.
